Back in New York City after the London adventure of The Short Forever, cop-turned-lawyer Stone Barrington is assigned by his law firm, Woodman & Weld, to aid an important client in her quest to dump her unfaithful husband. Stone thinks the job is ordinary dirty work, but then things take a murderous turn, and the FBI and a foreign intelligence service become involved. Stone is pleasantly surprised to run into Carpenter, the beautiful British agent introduced in The Short Forever, who is in the city to begin an investigation of her own, one whose subject she refuses to reveal. But he suspects that her case might have some connection to the errant husband's, and knows that he and Dino, his former NYPD partner, are about to face the most bizarre and challenging assignment of their very colorful careers.
